from "Haec Studia," an address by Reverend John J. Wright, 1960

"It is not to the mere scientist that men ultimately look for freedom. The scientist is the master of know-how. The liberal arts men are the masters of know-why. Know-whymen are the ones who will always be distrusted by dictators, because poetry as taught them caprice, philosophy has taught them to question and to challenge on a higher level than that of mere formulae, and languages have taught them to talk. If there is one thing more than another that depotism cannot tolerate, it is informed, sensitive, capricious and questioning talk"
