This is the term that refers to the nine African-American students who tried to attend Little Rock Central High School in Little Rock, Arkansas in 1957. Governor Orval Faubus tried to stop this with the National Guard but President Eisenhower protected the students and allowed them to integrate into the high school.
The Little Rock school board voted to integrate their school system in 1957, before this event. The nine African-American students attempted to attend the school but met resistance when Governor Orval Faubus sent the Arkansas Nation Guard to prevent the Little Rock Nine from attending Little Rock Central High School. President Dwight D. Eisenhower deployed parts of the 101 st Airborne Division to Little Rock to protect the students and allow them to make their way to the school. However, Little Rock closed it public schools the next year (1958) to avoid any further integration.
