SlaveReconstruction
is the period of restoration in the South after the American
Civil War. This was a new era in the history of the country.
The country emerged with a new battle-to stabilize the South and
impose upon the newly freed slaves. On one side of the battlefield
were former slaves and abolitionists. On the other were former slave
owners.
SlavTo
whites, it became hard to accept blacks as equals. This was one
of the goals of the Reconstruction period. At this point, blacks
began to enjoy the rights granted to them as citizens by the new
amendments to the United States Constitution. They registered to
vote and became officials in office. The goals of the Reconstruction
were never fully reached nor were those that were implemented last
because as soon as Reconstruction ended in 1877 most practices of
restraining the rights of blacks returned.
uuuThere
were many fundamental changes that occurred in the process of attempting
to complete the goals of the Reconstruction. Blacks formed many
churches to prevent being lower class citizens in white churches.
Education in the black communities also took an astonishing rise.
Reconstruction began to scale back when the democratic office took
control of the government. They cut taxes, which severely lowered
the amount of money used on education especially on black schools.
Also, the number of blacks voters dropped severely due to methods
of the Ku Klux Klan and state governments such as lynchings
and poll taxes. The Reconstruction brought with it little lasting
results but set the stage for the Civil Rights Movement that in
a century would rock an entire country.
