gDuring
the period known as Reconstruction
after the Civil War, free blacks enjoyed the luxuries given to them
by the 13th, 14th, and 15th amendments to the
United States Constitution which included voting rights, and all
the rights guaranteed to citizens of the United States. But as Reconstruction
came to an end, the discrimination against the former slaves became
more and more evident. Examples of such discrimination included,
but were certainly not limited to, segregation,
discrimination at jobs, and, many times, they were not allowed to
practice their constitutional right to vote. The obstacles faced
by blacks on the road to equal status went by the name Jim Crow.
ssssJim Crow was the name of a character
in minstrel show. A minstrel show was the way whites used African
American stereotypes in their shows and painted their faces black
in an attempt to poke fun at the blacks. How the term came about
to describe the discrimination faced by African Americans is not
known. There are many places where Jim Crow laws got their origins
such as the Black Codes, and segregation before the Civil War.
pppWhite supremacy became an issue
around the late 1880s. Many issues facing the United States including
the conquest of the peoples in the Philippines, Hawaii, and Cuba
caused this.
