Equality
Throughout time, social class has played
a role in virtually every society. This system of social order designs
and dictates what is expected of the various social groups that inhabit
the society. However, this system also tends to place the concerns and
needs of those who find themselves lost at the bottom out of sight,
thus dismissing the presence of any issue and neglectfully contributing
to the social corrosion. Even in a land, such as the United States,
where parity and equal opportunity are professed to be the backbone
of society, only the notion of these ideals can be substantiated. Such
social downfalls like the profound existence of homelessness in even
the most affluent societies, suggests the notion that no ideal can become
reality. Children are left to subsist in housing that is literally falling
to pieces, and to survive without proper medical attention. The future
of America is subjected to improper education, confounded by the lack
of basic materials, trained professionals and the support needed to
keep them involved in their pursuits. Furthermore, if these conflicts
of the poor are never brought to the light of the public forum, generation
after generation will be subjected to the harsh environment where neglect
is ubiquitous and where the theory of survival is no longer a conception,
but a way of life. This is Kozol's purpose; to strive for a public call
for social change, and to guide the cause once it has arisen.

"The
cumulative ugliness of things contains its own toxicity, however.
It's hard to think that any city that has love for children would
allow them to
grow up in such a place."
