This obelisk, El Obelisco del Malecón, is situated in the capital along El Malecón, the city's main waterfront thoroughfare. The painting on it depicting the Mirabal sisters, titled "A Song to Liberty," is the work of artist Elsa Nuñez. Ironically, Trujillo originally ordered that the Obelisk be built to honor himself. The repainted version honoring the Mirabals was unveiled on March 8, 1997, International Women's Day.
