In 1994, Julia Alvarez's In the Time of the Butterflies was published. Alvarez, a Dominican-American writer, fled with her family to the U.S. to escape the Trujillo regime. Her novel, the result of a trip to the Dominican Republic and interviews with people who knew the Mirabals, including the surviving sister Dedé, tells the story of the sisters through historical fiction.
