While a large mass of Armenians were being killed off in huge numbers in Turkey, the United States and the rest of the world for that matter definitely acted as bystanders but Wilson wanted to stay as far away from the war and European affairs as possible. But at the same time, Americans knew what was going on and they did nothing about it because according to Wilson, there isn't enough evidence to prove that a genocide even took place. So many people came foward with testimonies about surviving the Armenian genocide in Turkey and still people refuse to call it what it is?
Honestly, I think Americans and all citizens of the world from this period need to be held accountable for the actions of the Turkish people and the plight of the Armenian people because this could have been stopped. People sat back and watched all this take place because they wanted to limit their own involvement, but is that really worth the lives of millions of people? Eventually Americans took some initiative and they tried to do something to help the remaining Armenians and Morgenthau even planned to allow Armenians in the Turkish borders into the US and the Turks refused. This should have instantly set off light bulbs in the minds of leaders in America and elsewhere and it should have been incentive for them to try so much harder. But they didn't and if they had, so many lives could have been spared.
There are so many ways we could have helped and it's just amazing to me because this country is usually on-point in helping the oppressed so I just don't understand why this situation wasn't important enough to hold America's attention. We could have easily sent troops for the protection of the Armenian people and we opted to do nothing. I have to say that I'm really ashamed of the fact that there were people who knew what was going on and not only did nothing but also denied that what was going on was really going on. It's sad that it takes the loss of more that a million lives for people to listen up and actually pay attention. Now, people everywhere are doing what they can to make the Turks admit what happened but all these later, is that even effective? That isn't going to bring back all the people that were killed and it's not going to reverse the trauma and other effects of the remaining Armenian population. America should have done something then instead of trying to fix it all now.
