From the September 1881 Register, Volume 1, Number 1:

"Military notes . . . This year's battalion is by far larger than any within our rememberance. A new company has been added, raising the number to seven, and the number of men in each company has been materially increased, the average being about thirty men to a company. The total effective strength of the battalion will be about three-hundred and twenty-five, officers and men . . . The importance of a good drum corps cannot be over-estimated . . . "
