from "Books" in the 1940 Latin School Register

" . . . One of the most useful activities in our lives is reading; for reading opens up to us new doors of knowledge. Recorded in books is the story of the progress of the human race. Through books one may travel from the jungles of darkest Africa to the wind-swept icelands of the frozen Arctic. Through good reading we greatly increase our knowledge of people. We learn more intimately how people speak and think, and gain an insight into the actions and motives of humanity. A great book is a gift of the gods to aspiring man."
